About Abbeyfield Reigate

Abbeyfield Reigate provides high quality, value for money sheltered accommodation for older, independent people -  with activities supported by an active volunteer network.  We operate on a not-for-profit basis, which enables us to re-invest any surpluses in projects to improve the home and the facilities for residents.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Abbeyfield Trustee

Abbeyfield trustees are responsible for setting and steering the strategic direction for the Society and providing leadership to ensure the society’s house is well integrated into the community and provides quality of life to residents on a long-term basis.    Trustees have ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of each society, ensuring that it is solvent, well run, and delivers charitable outcomes for the benefit of the community for which it was set up.

Role Purpose

  • To agree and regularly monitor the Society’s strategic direction and ensure that it pursues its objectives in keeping with this.

  • To actively contribute to the strategic direction to the Society – setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets, evaluating performance against those targets.

  • To make sound commercial decisions on the future of the Society that are aligned with market demand.

  • With other Trustees, ensure that the organisation functions within the legal, charitable and financial requirements of the organisation and strive to achieve best practice.

  • Act in the interests of the Society and to adhere to the requirements laid down in the Abbeyfield’s Membership Agreement and the Society’s Articles of Association.

  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Society.

  • Ensure the financial stability of the Society and the proper investment of funds.

  • Create a professional staffing structure, which supports the business.

  • Use a range of skills, knowledge and experience to help reach sound decisions.  This could include investment of legacy funds or surplus, scrutiny of proposals, leading and initiating debate, providing advice or guidance on new initiatives, making investment decisions or marketing the society to the wider community.

Person Specification

Abbeyfield Reigate has a small number of paid staff, and the trustees take an active role in supporting projects and activities that suit their skill set.   The time commitment is likely to be 2-3 hours per week on average.    Two hour monthly trustee meetings usually take place on the 3rd Friday every month.  Other activities can be done at times and locations to suit.

We are looking for someone who will have:

  • A commitment to the aims and objectives of the Society and to promoting it in the interests of residents

  • Good, independent judgement, and an ability to think creatively

  • An ability to work effectively as a team, contributing an independent perspective, and engaging and influencing different stakeholders

Terms of Appointment

Trustee appointments are usually for terms of 3 years. Trustees can be re-appointed for further 3-year terms as appropriate.

Whilst the role is unpaid, reasonable expenses are payable in line with Abbeyfield’s standard expenses policy.
